Women The Cold War Goodwill Tours - 1446 Words
In 1941, American women tennis players served as goodwill ambassadors for the state department. These goodwill ambassadors led successful women on global tours. Successful women were given the opportunity to grow and become the image of the United States internationally. Even though they were doing good with the state department, the women experienced much pressure and criticism. Alice Marble who created the Cold War goodwill tours. There were women abroad playing sport after World War II. Althea Gibson was one of the leaders for the global tours along with Doris Hart. The goodwill tours were seen as significant because women succeeded in supporting cultural diplomacy and American propaganda while women are stay home as mothers and wives at the time. Ashley Brown obtained her evidence from Harold E. Howlandââ¬â¢s letter to the editors in ââ¬Å"The Case of the State Department Athleteâ⬠from Sports Illustrated. Harold Howland of the State Department explained athletes as essential to to American diplomacy. He did get arguments that the tour were used mainly for political purposes, and he argued that sports is a way of life that brings people together. He believed athletes have as much cultural merit as artists. He put much importance in these athletes; however, he did not express anything about American women. This is strange because many of these female athletes were tennis players who were State Department athletes.
